24 x 24 inches
Mixed Media with Oil, Gallery Wrapped Canvas
A background of browns and oranges made out of spray paint and swirling inks. To the right is a drawing of the Euphydryas phaeton (Baltimore Checkerspot Butterfly) in graphite. To the left is the chrysalis of this butterfly, already beautifully spotted and gilded with a hint of gold leaf. Towards the bottom of the painting is the emerged butterfly, beautiful and ready to fly.
Inspiration What inspired this piece is transformation and everything not being as it seemed. The chrysalis of the Bay Checkerspot butterfly is beautiful and looks like it has gold spots, but the butterfly itself is even more stunning once it emerges.
